Meet the Doctor
Michael Whalen, D.C., former chiropractic skeptic turned advocate, knows what it's like to choose pain over a visit to the doctor. After all, it was just a decision that awarded him 8 months of the most debilitating pain he'd ever endured. It was that decision that made mundane tasks excruciating and his preferred lifestyle impossible.
It was that decision that made him a chiropractor.
Twenty years ago, Dr. Whalen suffered an injury that left his neck nearly immobile. Unable to tolerate the pain after six months, he confided in a friend. That friend told him about chiropractic care.
Dismissing the idea as a waste of time and money, Dr. Whalen resumed his self-inflicted torture. Opposed to masking the pain with muscle relaxers and pain killers, Dr. Whalen continued a downward slide. Eight weeks later, he was desperate enough to give his friend's suggestion a try.
Within two weeks his pain disappeared.
Within four years he was a chiropractor.
Today, 15 years later and serving thousands of patients, it is Dr. Whalen's understanding of chronic pain that inspires him to continue to help others prevent and recover from personal injury through chiropractic care. By combining a variety of chiropractic techniques with Active Release Technique, physical therapy, exercises, and nutrition, Dr. Whalen offers a complete wellness program for all ages from pediatric to seniors.
A Virginia Beach native, Dr. Whalen obtained his Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology from Virginia Tech before completeing his doctor of chiropractic at Logan College in St. Louis. Since opening the Alpine Health Center in 1996, he has used a broad spectrum of techiniques to treat children, adults, medical professionals, physical therapists, professional athletes and even a neurosurgeon. Those techniques include both force and non-force, Active Release Technique and Acupuncture.
Dr. Whalen, also a lecturer and teacher, enjoys the active Virginia Beach lifestyle. Some of his favorite activities are surfing, skiing, motorcycling and athletic training.
