Client Reviews

Your First Visit

Upon entering our office our receptionist will greet you and welcome you. We will request you fill our patient forms located in the New Patient Center. The paperwork provides us with general information about yourself and your condition.

Next you will have a consultation with Dr. Whalen to discuss your health-related problems, concerns, as well as potential treatment options. Your first visit is designed for Dr. Whalen to learn more about you, your condition and your expectations to determine whether chiropractic care meet your goals.

After your consultation, Dr. Whalen will perform a complete chiropractic examination testing your reflexes, your ability to turn and bend as well as other standard neurological, orthopedic, postural, and physical examinations. Nothing will be done in our office without your consent.

Your specific condition may require us to take x-rays to get a full evaluation of a patient. X-rays help us rule out more serious conditions or assist us in developing the most effective treatment plan for you. Most people are amazed once they see their x-rays and can often immediately identify their misalignments and degeneration themselves.

After discussing with you your history and your goals, examining your spine and reviewing any x-rays or tests, Dr. Whalen will discuss recommendations with you. If you have a condition that requires care with other providers, the doctor will tell you. If Dr. Whalen believes we can help you, we will recommend treatment and a wellness program.

Patients will generally be provided with their first treatment at the conclusion of their report of findings if they chose to begin treatment. This may include spinal adjustments, physical therapies, and/or soft tissue therapies. Treatment is interactive with you so you can express any concerns you have about the style of adjustment you will be most comfortable with.

Prior to leaving, patients will be instructed on a wellness program to be conducted at home. If you are in pain when you first come into our office this may include ice or heat application instructions, avoidance of certain activities or positions, as well as home exercises and/or stretches.

What is Chiropractic Care?

Although it’s been practiced for nearly 120 years, chiropractic care has become much more popular and accessible over the past three decades.  According to the Association of Chiropractic Colleges, chiropractic is a healthcare discipline that emphasizes the inherent recuperative power of the body to heal itself without the use of drugs or surgery.  The practice of chiropractic focuses on the relationship between structure (primarily the spine) and function (as coordinated by the nervous system) and how that relationship affects the preservation and restoration of health. In addition, doctors of chiropractic recognize the value and responsibility of working in cooperation with other health care practitioners when in the best interest of the patient. Most chiropractors help their patients by reducing pain and improving their bodies’ functionality.   Many also provide education or lifestyle coaching on how they can account for their own health via corrective exercises, ergonomics, nutritional counseling, and other long-term healing strategies.

How Chiropractic Treatments Work?

Initial visits to a chiropractor often include spinal and postural screenings.  Most of the benefits associated with chiropractic care result from specific chiropractic adjustments that are based in part from the results of your screenings.   Chiropractic adjustments work through the manual adjustment and/or manipulation of the spine.  One of the best things about receiving chiropractic adjustments is that they offer a drug-free pathway to healing. Essentially, the basic underlying principle of chiropractic care is that the body has the innate ability to heal itself under the right conditions; it is the chiropractor’s role to help create an environment that facilitates the healing process. And because the nervous system controls our cells and organs, chiropractors focus on the health of the spine being properly aligned.   When the spine shifts out of its proper alignment, then adjustments are used to help bring the spine back into alignment.

Conditions Treated at the Great Neck Office.

Evidence shows that the influence of a chiropractic adjustment goes well beyond bad backs.  There is a growing field of evidence from medical research studies, systematic reviews and case studies supporting the many therapeutic benefits of chiropractic care.  Some of the more common conditions that are treated with chiropractic care include:

  • Back pain
  • Headaches
  • Bowel regularity
  • Improved mental clarity
  • Ear infections
  • Neck pain
  • Arthritis and joint pain
  • Scoliosis
  • Asthma
  • Blood pressure
  • Healthy pregnancy
  • Organ function
  • Surgery prevention
  • Car accident injuries
  • Sports injuries

One of the reasons why chiropractic care is tied to so many conditions is because it has been shown to help reduce inflammation, the root cause of so many different diseases.  Another factor behind why chiropractic can help numerous health challenges has to do with its ability to balance the bodies’ sympathetic/parasympathetic response of the nervous system.  Most of us live in a sympathetic “fight or flight” response and a chiropractic adjustment in the upper cervical region and sacral region can stimulate a parasympathetic response that reduces stress and allows certain organs to function to a higher degree including the digestive and endocrine systems.

How to Choose a Chiropractor?

While there are dozens of top rated chiropractors in Great Neck and throughout Virginia Beach, Dr. Whalen’s approach is not exclusively limited to problems with the nervous system and musculoskeletal system.  When appropriate, Dr. Whalen also offers physiotherapy, lifestyle advice and works together with other spine specialists in Virginia Beach, sports medicine doctors in Virginia Beach, and/or other Virginia Beach chiropractors in a multi-disciplinary manner to ensure you’re receiving the comprehensive care needed. For women who may be pregnant, prenatal chiropractic care may be included as part of your comprehensive prenatal care as advised by your doctor.  And, when it comes to chronic pain, many patients today prefer that their medical doctors support a multi-disciplined approach, which may include anything from chiropractic care, acupuncture, laser therapy, massage therapy or active release treatment.  Most importantly, it is critical that healthcare professionals are working together effectively to ensure patient safety and optimal wellness is achieved.

Dr. Michael Whalen

Michael Whalen, D.C., former chiropractic skeptic turned advocate, knows what it’s like to choose pain over a visit to the doctor. After all, it was just a decision that awarded him 8 months of the most debilitating pain he’d ever endured. It was that decision that made mundane tasks excruciating and his preferred lifestyle impossible.

It was that decision that made him a chiropractor.

30 years ago he was injured. Dr. Whalen suffered an injury that left his neck nearly immobile. Unable to tolerate the pain after six months, he confided in a friend. That friend told him about chiropractic care.

Dismissing the idea as a waste of time and money, Dr. Whalen resumed his self-inflicted torture. Opposed to masking the pain with muscle relaxers and pain killers, Dr. Whalen continued a downward slide. Eight weeks later, he was desperate enough to give his friend’s suggestion a try.

Within two weeks his pain disappeared.

Within four years he was a chiropractor.

Today, 25 years later and serving thousands of patients, it is Dr. Whalen’s understanding of chronic pain that inspires him to continue to help others prevent and recover from personal injury through chiropractic care. By combining a variety of chiropractic techniques with Active Release Technique, physical therapy, exercises, and nutrition, Dr. Whalen offers a complete wellness program for all ages from pediatric to seniors.

A Virginia Beach native, Dr. Whalen obtained his Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology from Virginia Tech before completing his doctor of chiropractic at Logan College in St. Louis. Since opening the Alpine Health Center in 1996, he has used a broad spectrum of techiniques to treat children, adults, medical professionals, physical therapists, professional athletes, and even a neurosurgeon. Those techniques include both force and non-force, Active Release Technique and Acupuncture.

Dr. Whalen, also a lecturer and teacher, enjoys the active Virginia Beach lifestyle. Some of his favorite activities are surfing, skiing, motorcycling, and athletic training.
